In 1292, after spending nearly 20 years in the court of emperor Kublai Khan, Marco Polo departed China with 14 ships filled with over 600 passengers and crew. Although Marco Polo described every aspect of his adventures in detail, he never revealed what happened to these lost ships, passengers or treasure on board – even on his deathbed. Drawn in by the potential riches to be found – but most inspired by the intrigue of the historical mystery – Drake embarks on a quest to find the lost fleet. He soon realizes that Marco Polo was hiding a much bigger secret – he had gone on a secret expedition on behalf of the emperor to find the mythical kingdom of Shambhala (otherwise known as Shangri-La) and to recover the legendary Cintamani Stone, the “wish-fulfilling jewel” of Buddhist mythology. The Stone is described by Marco Polo as a massive raw sapphire – if it truly exists, it would be worth billions of dollars today. This discovery sets Drake on a new course following Marco Polo’s 700-year-old trail through a diverse range of exotic environments to find out if the lost city of Shambhala, rumored to lie deep in the Himalayas, really exists. This quest also pits him against a new, more formidable adversary who is after the same artifact – a ruthless, rogue paramilitary leader with a private army and a relentless ambition to recover the stone for himself.

I don’t quite know how to describe how great this game really is…I just sat down for 15 hours straight and couldn’t put the controller down until the end of the credits. This game combines everything and anything you could ever want in a movie, a game or any entertainment experience. Uncharted 2 has incredible characters, wonderful story, some of the best acting I’ve ever seen (Not just the voice acting, but the actual animations of the characters, their facial expressions), everything is done so beautifully I’m absolutely speechless. Among Thieves exceeded the hype in my mind, it immerses you in this incredibly detailed and lush environment, seamlessly bouncing you back and forth from gameplay to breathtaking cinematic wonder, and most often, combines them both at the same time. Just the attention to detail is astounding. I wish I had a better vocabulary so I could give this review justice but you should just see for yourself! You will not regret this purchase one bit, the multiplayer is even fun! If you own a PS3 and don’t have this game, then you should sell your PS3.

Uncharted is one to pay particular attention to, especially as it is introducing us to a brand-new franchise and a brand-new hero, Nathan Drake. The game proudly harkens back to the days of the classic pulp adventuring films in which the everyman hero overcomes a series on seemingly insurmountable obstacles to find the treasure and win the girl. Very much in the vein of Indiana Jones and although it may sound clichéd, it is something that really hasn’t been done in video games before, and as such it works wonderfully.

The story revolves around Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter hot on the trail of a long lost treasure of Sir Francis Drake, whom he believes to be descended from. Nathan comes into possession of Drake’s diary and he believes he has found proof that Drake had found something. Without spoiling the plot, which is the engine that drives this game, it’s that “something” that Nathan goes looking for.

Technically speaking, Uncharted is a marvel. Its graphics are on par with anything out there, the immersive jungle environments that the game creates are simply astounding. Lush vegetation, beautiful water effects and pitch-perfect lighting all work together to convey a motion-picture feel. And with the action occurring from a third-person perspective, instead of the increasingly popular first-person view, you get the feeling you are watching a movie, even though you are the one controlling the action.

And speaking of controls, the game does an excellent job of allowing you to fluidly controlling Nathan with a minimum numbers of buttons. And in the sections of the game in which Nathan has to climb and jump up walls or over cliffs, a potentially frustrating experience is averted through the tight (but not too tight) controls.

Is the game perfect? Unfortunately, no. The game is completely linear, disappointing those gamers who prefer the more sandbox-style games. You essentially follow the story from beginning to end with virtually no straying from the set path. Also, there are many set pieces throughout the game in which you need to dispatch wave after unending wave of pirates. As soon as you think you’ve got them all, more show up and open fire on you. It can get just a tad bit tedious, especially when it can take up to 8 or 10 shots to take out a single pirate.

These are small gripes, though, in the overall experience of Uncharted and nothing that can’t be addressed in the inevitable sequels. For now, though, we can only say that you need to play this game if you own a PS3. You are truly missing out otherwise.
